Iron Trader
Identity and UX design for a German reality show whose first season ran in the Fall 2011. The logomark suggests the bold and competitive nature of this stock trading competition. With a final showdown in Wall Street, we created a visual vocabulary that combines the familiarity of stock trading, newsticker, mobile gaming and broadcast storytelling.
Designed as a transmedia experience, the iPad-friendly website is divided into 3 panels: Leaderboard, Episodes, Research.
Build a Better Burb
This project started as a design competition which called for bold ideas from architects, urban designers, planners, and visionaries for the underutilized land in Long Island’s downtowns.
We transformed the Build a Better Burb website into a growing archive of case studies and resources that focus on four big ideas. The website engages a broader audience, including those in Long Island and countless regions in the United States facing similar challenges.
eg Conference
Leading up to the inspiring conference’s Fifth Anniversary celebration in April 2011, we developed a new logo playing off the meaning of e.g. as an abbreviated form of exempli gratia or “for example.” The logo is encapsulated in a reflective spotlight like a staged presentation. The playful trading cards and event program feature illustrated portraits of the presenters in familiar paintings.
We developed a website and web app making the rich archive of presenters accessible and easy to share.
EX-Sport
Complete rebranding of EX-Sport, an Indonesian bag maker founded in 1956. In early 2010 we put in practice a yearlong plan that refreshes EX-Sport's brand image to remain competitive nationally and reach international market. The new logo is simple and lingua franca, allowing for a broad range of applications. The first retail store opened in February 2011, followed by dozens of new openings and rennovations nationwide. New product developments based on our directions begun to hit the shelves in April 2011.
The Metropolitan
Museum of Art
We designed an exhibition catalogue for Guitar Heores: Legendary Craftsmen from italy to New York, a special exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The typography, arranged as if strung vertically, decorates the cover and interior pages.
Princeton University
Art Museum
The museum is located at the heart of Princeton University campus, integral to the academic community and local town. We redesigned the museum’s magazine and later their logo, typography guildeines, campus banners, posters, annual report, brochures, gallery collateral, and mobile site for certain projects—bringing greater cohesion to the museum’s identity while staying true to its core mission.
Sotheby’s
We created an online catalogue system for Sotheby’s auction house. The system allows Sotheby’s to publish catalogues quickly allowing users to examine objects in great detail. The catalogue was also distributed on USB cards for travelers without internet access. In 2010, we created a custom catalogue for the Collection of Patricia Kluge, an estate in Virginia. The catalogue showcases 900 lots, letting bidders experience exquisite objects in an immersive environment. The entire catalogue can be viewed as a checklist or downloaded as a high-resolution printable PDF.
Type Directors Club 56 Exhibition
In 2010, we brought TDC56, the annual exhibition of the Type Directors Club, to Indonesia for the first time. Installed at a high-profile location, the exhibition showcased 242 winning works of typographic excellence from all over the world. We created an identity for the exhibition inspired by the folded paper of two-color origami turned into the national flag, which you can see in stop-motion on the website. The exhibition features a T-shaped pedestal with stacks of flyers displaying thumbnails of all winning works, a keepsake piece for visitors. Enthusiastic students volunteered to help install the exhibition.
MBFA
Identity redesign for Mark Borghi Fine Art, a gallery based in the Upper East Side and Bridgehampton, NY. We created a custom bold typeface that strikes a balance between serif and sans-serif, formal and informal. The logo works in various pop colors, matching an adjacent artwork.
We also designed a catalogue for MBFA's retrospective exhibition of Mercedes Matter (1913–2001). Her name is printed along the book edges to illustrate her understated career as she was surrounded by well-known artists like Jackson Pollock, Lee Krasner, Franz Kline, Philip Guston, Alexander Calder and Willem de Kooning.
Metropolis Magazine
Metropolis + Japan supplement for the Dec’09 issue, showcasing recent well-designed Japanese products. The cover features a dimensional interplay between typography and Hiroshima dining chair rendered in a palette that suggests the simplicity of Japanese design.
ICFF’09 Design Guide themed “the comfortable city.” Vibrant sample-pattern typography decorates this pocket-sized guidebook's cover and interior pages, a device that helps find desired content quickly. The cover features the Flatiron plaza, one NYC district spearheading area improvement projects.
Origin
We created the brand identity and environmental graphics for Origin, the first green café/grocery/retail concept in Bandung, West Java. Located in the congested downtown area, Origin café offers a cozy, relaxing refuge surrounded by vertical gardens along the interior walls. The grocery shop and even the restrooms are covered with wall graphics depicting nature.
Maru
Brand identity for Maru, a chain of japanese mochi and frozen yogurt dessert at Plaza Indonesia. We used circles, or “Maru” in Japanese, as a dominant element in the logo, packaging, brochure, and store signage.
MoMA
Online exhibition for Joan Miró: Painting and Anti-Painting 1927-1937 at MoMA. The 107 objects available on the website can be sorted in a various viewing modes (as gallery series, chronology, relative size, or thumbnail index). Each object can be examined in detail at magnified scale by moving your cursor around the image, recreating the sense of being in the same physical space with the work. We also created voiceover animations for key objects in each series. For Miró fanatics, we added a filter tool to sort objects by medium and aesthetics.
Guggenheim
We designed three issues of the Guggenheim magazine, completing the series with the museum's 50th Anniversary celebration. The last issue features the anniversary logo die-cut onto the metallic gold front cover, revealing details of Wright's watercolor sketch. The geometric logo was based on Frank Lloyd Wright's iconic building.
Steuben Glass
Icons and illustrations for Steuben Glass, a New York-based luxury crystal maker founded in 1933. We designed a set of zodiac icons and illustrations, as well as miscellaneous fun symbols, to be engraved as custom special order. The Zodiac Bowl was designed inspired by the zodiac icons, which are also used to construct a window display for Steuben’s flagship store on Madison Avenue in New York.

So far as I know there are three things to look for in web design: modern and intuitive design, the ability to suggest creative solutions that you yourself didn’t see, and the willingness to discuss and make adjustments moving forward such that you don’t feel you’re being charged by the minute.
When you come across all three in the same design shop you know you’ve got something special, and that’s what I’ve found in Studio Kudos. Working with them has contributed very positively to the style and effectiveness of our web site.

PRODUCT & SERVICES
Burnboxx
I have been fortunate to work with some amazing designers during my career and John stands out as a star among stars. An incredibly strategic thinker, I was gobsmacked by every option and iteration he presented us.
In fact, the only ding I could give working with Studio Kudos is that they make choosing a single design from the options very hard. I still get goosebumps every time I see the work that John did for Burnboxx and enthusiastically sing the praises of Studio Kudos whenever the opportunity arises.

It has been two years since Studio Kudos re-designed my website and blog. It is one thing to get feedback when you first re-launch a site, but I'm still receiving emails on a regular basis from visitors to my site how clean and attractive the design is!
Kudos took my idea for a 'mid-century modern' look and created a design that has an older feel, but isn't slick. It exceeded my design expectations.
I heard a quote recently that applies to Studio Kudos: "They're cheaper than anyone who is better and better than anyone who is cheaper."

Studio Kudos' expertise in redesigning my firm's website was invaluable. John offered a variety of solutions for creating a simple, yet bold and affirmative look for both showcasing my portfolio and building new opportunities for content on our website. I continually receive compliments on the additions that he envisioned for our website.
Not only is John talented and versatile as a designer, but he is also highly personable, straightforward, and accessible. He promises instant follow-up and turnaround, as well as articulate, unintimidating explanations for any technical questions. His commitment to our project helped us meet our goals efficiently.
